Iron Spring in Ustroń – history, trail, and health benefits
Location and context
The Iron Spring is located on the right-bank part of Ustroń, in the Zawodzie district, in the picturesque valley of the Gościeradowiec stream, about 200 meters above the bridge on Sanatoryjna Street. The spring is accessible via the red walking trail "Source Trail", starting at the City Hall. It is a peaceful route surrounded by greenery, ideal for a family walk.
Near the spring, there are benches inviting visitors to take a moment of rest and admire the nature of the Silesian Beskids.
History and healing benefits
The spring was discovered in 1883–1884 thanks to the archducal official Jan Kubisz. Water flowed from an old adit, where iron ore was previously mined for the local foundry – hence the name "Iron Spring".
Scientific studies confirmed the presence of ferrous oxalates and iron salts, which made the spring water used as a drinking cure, especially for anemia and weakness. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, it was a popular health attraction.
In 1888, the Ustroń Beautification Society enclosed the spring with a stone structure bearing the plaque "Eisenquelle," created paths and bridges, and set up benches. In the following years, a wooden pavilion with a restaurant was built here, where dances and social meetings took place.
After World War II, the spring fell into oblivion. Nowadays, although somewhat neglected, it still remains an important tourist spot and a souvenir of Ustroń's spa history.
Trail and access for tourists
The Iron Spring is part of the popular Source Trail, which also leads to another valued site – Karol's Spring from 1916.
The route to the spring is not always easy to find – trail markers should be carefully followed. The path descends below the bridge and runs along the stream, and the last section is a narrow forest trail.
The spring is freely accessible, around the clock, and is an ideal destination for a short trip combined with a walk around Ustroń.
